He did his doctoral thesis at Harvard.
Dr. Carl Rand: Nathan’s father. Head of an Eco-tek company that was absorbed by Tellux Pharmaceuticals after he disappeared into the jungle four years ago.
Tor-tor: Two-year-old jaguar. Rescued by Manuel Azevedo, it was named after the Arawak Indian word for ghost. Poachers killed its mother.
Manuel (Manny) Azevedo: 32 years old. He’s training Tor-tor to be a hunter before he must release her into the wild. Half Indian and an orphan on the streets of Barcellas along the banks of the Amazon River, he was taken in by a missionary. He has a degree in biology at the University of Sao Paollo, and the Brazilian Indian Foundation (FUNAI) sponsored his scholarship. He’s now the head of the local FUNAI office. He’s stocky, black-haired, and carries a bullwhip by his side.
Kelly O’Brien: Daughter of Lauren and Marshall, and Frank is her brother. American doctor who works for MEDEA. She has a trace of a Boston accent, a splash of freckles on her face, and emerald green eyes with a hint of gold. Has a six-year-old daughter named Jessie.
Frank O’Brien: Kelly’s brother. He’s a tall redhead and works for the CIA.
Jessie: Kelly’s six-year-old daughter. Staying with Lauren and Marshall while her mom is cavorting about in the jungle.
Lauren O’Brien: Kelly and Frank’s mom. Married to Marshall. Works at the Instar Institute in Langley, Virginia. She gets queasy when viewing gross necropsies. She uses reading glasses, and is working on studying the disease spread by the arrival of Clark.
Professor Resh Kouwe: Strong as an ox with a compact frame. He was formerly a shaman of the Tirios tribe of southern Venezuela. Schooled at Oxford thanks to Carl Rand, he received a degree in linguistics and paleoanthropology. Smokes a pipe, and is an expert in botanical medicines and jungle diseases.
